BIOGRAPHY




kwe is a poet on a mission. He has toured extensively in the USA and beyond, performing his original style called "Afro Roots Hop", a fusion of roots chanting and hip hop poetree over African drum-infused dubs. Dirges of Becoming is his first collection of poetry published by Afro Roots Hop Press in 2010. Based in Mount Shasta since 2018, kwe has been touring the US since 2000 and recently returned to his deejaying and production origins with deep roots in the Boston, Chicago and Oakland Hip Hop and Roots Reggae/Dub scenes. After over 20 years of honing his microphone craft through sound collaborations with various artists internationally, Akwerius emerges as one of the most energetic and multitalented independent performers and recording artists of today, having appeared on numerous mixtapes, albums and single releases, whether delivering hypnotic chants laced with spoken word poetry or dropping high caliber lyricism over cosmic riddims. His latest album Astronomy, released in late 2019, is an Afrofuturistic Hip Hop Odyssey remixing scientific observations about the stars unto an eclectic palette of sounds ranging from boom bap to devotional roots by way of dub poetry. In 2006, he founded the Word. Sound. Life., the Social Network for Media, Arts and Education operated by the organization "Voices of the Nu Millennium” (co-founded with fellow Poet Marvin Tate in Chicago, 2006), In 2020, he is setting to turn Word.Sound.Life into a household brand known for releasing top quality music, media and lifestyle products and services through its Music Is Healing channel, workshops, retreats and festivals. kwe is currently hard at work on his next Afro Roots Hop album called "Bright Side".
